Dick Heldar was a war correspondent artist for the London newspapers whose sketches of battles in the Sudan became popular in London society.  He loved his childhood sweetheart, Maisie, but she did not return his love in kind but his friendship with his great friend Turpenhow through wars and peace was legendary in its depth. An old war wound caused Heldar to slowly go blind and the tale of his struggles and challenges is one of Kipling’s best.
